Who We Are
The committed, courageous and compassionate volunteer firefighters at Lafayette Fire Company are your neighbors, friends and the people you meet daily around town.
You may recognize us from our day jobs—lawyer, IT specialist, manager, electrician–or you may have spotted us spending time with our families or frequenting local businesses. Despite all that we do, we also volunteer as firefighters to serve and protect the people and property of East Lampeter Township.
We invite you to join your family, friends and neighbors and become a Lafayette Fire Company volunteer and play a vital role in making our community safer and stronger.
Many Ways to Volunteer
Lafayette Fire Company has a variety of positions that can be filled by volunteers. While many volunteers opt to fight fires and work on the front lines, there are other volunteer opportunities that are essential to the smooth and effective operation of the fire company. There are many ways to get involved:
Firefighter - Home Responder
These volunteers are at the forefront of answering calls for service. The LFC provides FREE training for all volunteers, focusing on various levels of community service. These firefighters live local and respond from home upon being paged of a call for service. The annual membership requirements are 24 hours of training per year, 15% response to calls, 24 committee hours consists of community service, chores or non-fire related activities, and attending 6 of 12 membership meetings to conduct the business of the fire company.
Firefighter - Duty Crew
These volunteer members may not live local, but have the opportunity of serving the LFC. Prior experience is preferred. The LFC provides the necessary PPE and helps facilitate any additional training to meet the LFC Level Book Requirements. A Duty Crew member may staff the station during daytime hours, weekends and overnights to better serve the community. While staffing the station, a Duty Crew firefighter is expected to be in uniform, perform a training task, and station chore. A Duty Crew Firefighter is asked to serve a minimum of 8 hours per month & is responsible for logging hours.
Firefighter - Live-In
Live-In firefighters are provided FREE living accommodations (WIFI, utilities, semi-private dorms) in exchange for answering calls for service and completing station chores. Live-In Firefighters must achieve the LFC Training Levels Book “Black Level” within (6) months of moving in. All Live-In Firefighters are expected to spend a minimum of 4 consecutive nights each week staffing the fire station or a minimum staffing of 40 hours per calendar week. Live-In Firefighter position availability may vary depending on current openings.
Training Requirements:
- PA Essentials of Firefighting MODS 1-4
- Hazardous Materials Operations
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
- Vehicle Rescue Technician or equivalent
- Current First Aid, CPR, AED Certification
- Infectious Control, Bloodborne Pathogens Class
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License
Associate Member
Associate Members play a vital role on the administrative end of the organization. Associate Members may serve in their area of expertise in order to help run the multi-million-dollar 501 c3 non-profit business of the fire company. The company relies on abilities to do marketing, social media/web design/videography, finances, data-entry/research, fundraising, grant writing, event promotions, building & grounds maintenance, Cadet Camp staff, High School Internship Facilitators, etc. If you have a passion or expertise in an area, we have an opportunity for you! The annual membership requirements are 24 committee hours and attending 6 of 12 membership meetings to conduct the business of the fire company.
Fire Police Officer
Fire Police Officers are provided with the neccesary PPE and training to assist in protecting emergency responders and making sure traffic and people are directed safely around incidents. The annual membership requirements are 10% response to calls, 24 committee hours consists of community service, chores or non-fire related activities, and attending 6 of 12 membership meetings to conduct the business of the fire company.
Junior Firefighter
Junior Firefighters reside locally in or near our first due response area are 14-17 years old and given the opportunity to run calls to learn the basics of our everyday operations. Junior Firefighters are trained along the way to eventually serve as Interior Firefighters at the age of 18. The annual membership requirements are 24 hours of training per year, 15% response to calls, 24 committee hours consists of community service, chores or non-fire related activities, and attending 6 of 12 membership meetings to conduct the business of the fire company.
Junior Firefighter Expectations: Being a firefighter can be a dangerous job. This opportunity to volunteer should not be taken lightly by the junior firefighter applicant or the parent/guardian. Strict laws exist in the state of Pennsylvania to protect minors from the most hazardous dangers. It is the responsibility of the Junior Firefighter to learn and know these laws.
